On the 13th of August 2020, the Moldovan National Platform, together with Amnesty International Moldova, organized a public act of solidarity with the Belarusian National Platform and the population of Belarus, regarding the presidential elections from the 9th of August 2020 and the political situation in Belarus.
During the protest, the Moldovan National Platform presented a Declaration regarding the current situation in Belarus, where the signers express their concerns regarding the political situation in Belarus and the excessive violence used by the law-enforcement bodies against peaceful protesters.
”We urge the Belarusian government to stop all acts of violence and the persecution of protesters, to respect the right to freedom of peaceful assembly, freedom of expression and of the press and to release all unfairly detained and all political prisoners.”, states the Declaration.
The Moldovan National Platform also strongly condemns the statement made by the President of the Republic of Moldova, on behalf of the Moldovan people. On 10 August 2020, Mr. Igor DODON, congratulated Mr. Aleksandr LUKASHENKO of being elected as President of Belarus. The Moldovan President rushed to express his congratulations ignoring severe concerns about compliance with electoral standards and repressions of the peaceful protests. We consider this statement represents neither the majority of the Moldovans nor of the signatories of this statement. The people of the Republic of Moldova, in solidarity with the Belarusians, respect the highest standards and fairness of the electoral process and the right to peaceful protest.
